Walking with Trilobites

Making them come alive

And a big thankyou from Olenus for watching.

Not sure if he made these tracks, but he insisted on being in the credits.

A study of localities referred to by Crimes in his article Geological Journal Vol 7, Issue 1. All localities assigned to Festiniog Stage of the Upper Cambrian (Fearnsides 1905, 1910 Williams 1930) except #8 which he assigned to the Maentwrog Stage although recorded no fossils, but lithogically similar to the Festiniog Stage.

Locality 1 Northern slope of Cwm Graianog SH 625 630

Locality 2 Northern slope of Cwm Graianog SH

Locality 3 Northern slope of Cwm Graianog SH

Locality 4 Cwm Graianog SH 624 628

Locality 5 Roadside cutting on the A4212. 2.5km West of Arenig. SH 782 388

Crimes gave a map reference of SH 782 388 for this site, a road cutting on the A4212. This wild and relatively featureless landscape is not easy to take quick bearings of, with the aid of satellite navigation, this site is more accurately SH 78211 38524. The exposure is relatively fresh, up to 30ft high and extending to about 100 yards in all. It wasn’t examined as a deep drainage ditch was difficult to negotiate and parking will have to be at the forestry entrance some 300 yards back up the hill ( SH 78429 38693 ). Traffic moves through here at some speed!

Locality 6 Coastal location Borth y Gest SH 564 372. Car park is some 300 yards away at SH 56459 37523. Can take a footpath down the cliffs or possible walk round if the tide is out. Outcrops very weathered with limited fresh rock, possibly come after a storm!

Locality 7 Disused quarry south of A497, Wern, Porthmadog SH 540 396. Pulled in next to a post box at SH 54076 39655, so the map reference was spot on. Very overgrown quarry, bring gardening gear (and steps to negotiate the low wall.) Again steeply dipping black shales with siltstones. Collected samples 7A, 7B and 7C. Photograph 7A. Apart from gardening gear, this site has limited parking as the lane is single track.

Locality 8 Ynys Cynger, Black Rock Sands SH 554 365
